Ever wondered about saying Happy Christmas to a family member in a greeting card over two centuries old?
The world’s first-born and most ancient Christmas cards are going for sale in New York, America.
The very first set available are now being offered for sale at public auction; great to obtain your hands on as that special gift idea this Christmas.
But the two century year-old greetings cards come at a price tag: saying “greetings” might be up to £10,000.
Exclusively 18 of these greetings cards, that were published in London in 1843 and costing one shilling, are known to really exist.
They are being auctioned off at Sotheby’s, the art and auction house, in The Big Apple.
Jock Elliott, the late US advertising boss, had acquired 3 during his life time and his loved ones are selling them.
A spokesperson for the auctioneer said: “The cards were quite expensive at the time and were not a runaway success. The tradition of sending cards really began a few years later.”
The cards have scenes of family feasting and charity for the poor and were designed by creator and artist John Calcott Horsley for producer Sir Henry Cole.
A banner is inside with the greetings “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You.”
